Istanbul back then

ImageIstanbul was established in the mid-seventh century BC when a Greek explorer named Byzas was told by the Oracle at Delphi to sail up the Bosphorus and found a city. The result was the city of Byzantium which over the next thousand years became a significant center of trade and commerce. In the early fourth century AD, the Emperor Constantine made it the new capital of the Eastern Roman Empire, renaming it Constantinople.

As the Western Roman Empire fell to barbarian invasions in the fifth and sixth centuries, the eastern half, known as the Byzantine Empire became Rome's successor. The empire witnessed a rise and fall of fortunes over the next thousand years finally falling to the Ottoman Turks led by 'the conqueror', Mehmet ll.  Mehmet renamed the city Istanbul and began to rebuild and repopulate it. Successive sultans funded the construction of impressive palaces, mosques and bazaars. As the Ottoman Empire grew to include a vast territory including the Middle East, North Africa and much of the Balkans, Istanbul became a melting pot of nationalities. However by the1800s,Istanbul had lost most of its former glory. A nationalist movement began gaining strength in the early 20th century, resulting in the overthrow of the sultan in 1922 and the establishment of the Turkish Republic. After the War of Independence, the nationalist leader Mustafa Kemal Ataturk created a new capital in Ankara. Istanbul however remained Turkey's cultural and commercial center.
