Best of city in a Day

ImageIf you have only a day to spend in the city, decide what kind of a tourist you are - whether you prefer visiting museums and admiring centuries-old artwork, or you prefer listening to opera and watching theater, or you would rather go for the "fun" aspect and indulge in frolic at amusement parks and music clubs. Or maybe you want to escape the mundanities of life and go for long quiet strolls in the tranquil ambience of a park.

That decided, it becomes pretty easy to enjoy Vienna.
Wherever you start, remember one very important thing: do not drive, especially if you do not have previous experience of driving in Austria. Take the bus or the underground train: they are much more efficient, quick, and comfortable.

If you are an intellectually challenged person, you can start from the most sophisticated of places, the Hofburg Imperial Palace in the first district. This contains all that your mind could ask for, including art museums, the Museum of Natural History, age-old churches and chapels, national monuments and a national library, the state treasury, and horse training stables. It also contains the Burrtheater, the official German language theater which focuses on a vivid portrayal of Austrian culture through its numerous plays and other performances.

Practically, it would require more than a day to go through the entire complex, and it is recommended that you do not - too much of the same kind of sightseeing may not be really interesting, especially if you are in a group.

If you are a shopping freak, Vienna is the place to be! But that should only be the case if funds are in ample supply. Scan through the list of shopping places, ranging from the most elaborately designed and, consequently, the most expensive, to the local flea markets, in various districts of Vienna. If you're into it, you're bound to find ample delights to quench your thirst for shopping.

It is recommended that you begin from the first district, the Innere Stadt, if you want to just spend the day at ease. This district contains the major highlight of Vienna - the Weiner Prater. Apart from an amusement park containing many attractions and the famed Ferris Wheel giving a magnificent view of Vienna, this place also contains ample space for just relaxing and lolling about. Walking, jogging, cycling, and observing nature are just some of the activities you can indulge in. Another park located not far from the Prater, Stadtpark, also allows the same activities, but with a totally different ambience - as it is not as big or as crowded, you can relax in solitude and peace. Heitzing (13th district) has the Lainzer Tiergarten, a exclusive wildlife reserve, which would get you close to nature in a city that is distracting and densely packed with people.

Having just one day to spend in Vienna, it is highly recommended that you go for the things you would not get in other metropolitan cities of this size and nature, like the natural parks and reserves. Apart from a few places to shop or eat, spending the full day at a busy urban location is not commendable. It would leave you exhausted and weary at the end of the day, and you might run low on funds. It is suggested that you spend this day trying to relate more to nature in such an urbanized city, to see how man and nature can coexist in harmony. That will leave you satisfied and fulfilled.
