ImageHere are several suggestions on what we think children might find interesting on their trip to DC. You can start with the National Zoo, a sure hit with the kids! Not only is admission free but the National zoo is home to 400 different species of animals and is set within the beautiful Rock Creek National Park .

Next, head for the National Museum of Natural History where the kids will love the 80 foot dinosaur skeleton while the adults will be mesmerized by the 45 and a half carat jewel known as the Hope Diamond. There is a great interactive display for young children in the Discovery room where children and adults alike can feel the skin of a crocodile or try on clothes from around the globe.

Now, if the children are space enthusiasts then your next stop should be the National Air & Space Museum. It has the largest collection of air and spacecraft in the world. There is an IMAX films and planetariums shows also.

Throughout the weekdays you can drop in at the Ripley Center on the National Mall to the Discovery Theater between 10 :00-11:30 a.m., where classic stories and folktales are told through puppet shows, storytellers, and mimes. The same kind of performances also take place at the Wolf Trap Farm Park in the Children’s Theater-in-the-Woods in Vienna, Virginia.

Children are always demanding money so let them see how it is printed firsthand at the Bureau of Engraving & Printing. There are tours every 15 minutes throughout weekdays from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

You cannot be in Washington DC and not see the antique Dentzel carousel in Glen Echo Park. This park in Bethesda, Maryland, offers year round activities in dance, theater, and the arts, for adults and children. There are concerts, demonstrations, workshops and festivals.

Now if you want to take the kids to a theme park, then Six Flags America is the place to go. Located just 30 minutes from downtown DC, the park features more than 100 rides, shows, and the area’s largest water park. The park is open April through October.

If your children want to get really close up to animals then you can head for the Reston Zoo. This thirty acre zoo located in Fairfax County, VA, is great for small children who get a chance to pet the animals and feed them too.

Another fun outdoor activity is on a Maryland farm where you and the kids can pick your own apples, pumpkins, berries, peaches and vegetables during the fall season. Many farms in Maryland host special events with hayrides and seasonal activities for children. Make sure you call ahead to confirm the schedule at:
