Dammam-King-Fahd-International-Airport

Damman, Saudi Arabia

Covering the most area of any airport in the world over a full 300 square miles of desert, the Dammam King Fahd International Airport is even bigger than the Kingdom of Bahrain! The airport has a mosque that can accommodate thousands and a Royal Terminal reserved for members of the Saudi Royal Family.

2 - Qamdo Bangda Airport

Qamdo-Bangda-Airport

Qamdo, Tibet

This airport has the distinction of being the world’s highest at 4,334 metres above sea level. The runway is 5,500 m long, which is necessary for safe landings at these extreme altitudes. Airplanes speeding during landing will need a longer distance to stop.

3 - Hong Kong International Airport

Hong-Kong-International-Airport

Chek Lap Kok, Hong Kong
The Hong Kong International Airport occupies a 12.48 square km site on an artificial island built from two smaller islands and reclaimed land. It’s the second busiest airport in terms of cargo traffic and the world’s 13th busiest in passenger traffic. Distinguishing features are its expo center and the luxury golf course, where those passing through can play a round of night golf for about $60.

4 - Barra Airport

Barra-Airport

Barra, Scotland

Without a paved runway, Barra Airport has its planes land on the beach. These are not ideal conditions because the sand and salt can damage the planes’ bearings and high tide can cause the runway to disappear altogether. Still, the airport sees more than 1,000 flights each year scheduled based on the tides.

5 - Svalbard Airport

Svalbard-Airport

Svalbard, Norway
The northernmost airport open to commercial travel, Svalbard Airport in Norway has runways built on permafrost, though sections need to be maintained with seasonal fluctuations in temperature.
